dir. Renny Harlin
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Deep sea sharks. Arrow's genre catalog is broad.

dir. Stanley Kubrick
Criterion put this on 4K in November 2025 and it landed as a new standard for the format. Rare Waves has a UK Limited Edition Steelbook for 2026 using the same Warner transfer, which is the pickup for non-US collectors.

S-Tier Criterion 4K. Chen Kaige's Chinese epic. Won the Palme d'Or. Criterion's Asian cinema releases are strong.
dir. Joel Coen

Sony Pictures · Steelbook
dir. Harmony Korine
S-Tier Criterion 4K. Harmony Korine's debut. Not for everyone, but Criterion treats it with the same care as everything else.
dir. Iain Softley
A teacher showed it to class in the late '90s and Angelina Jolie's nipple ended the experiment. Matthew Lillard not getting top billing. A 14.4 modem and 8 MB of RAM. Nobody is watching Hackers for the first time. They're buying it because it's their movie.
dir. Todd Solondz
S-Tier Criterion 4K. Todd Solondz. Not an easy watch. Criterion's disc.
dir. John Woo
S-Tier Universal 4K. Van Damme directed by John Woo in Louisiana. The action sequences work well in HDR.
dir. Anthony Hickox
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The third Hellraiser. Arrow's franchise releases have been comprehensive.
dir. Alan Smithee, Kevin Yagher
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The fourth Hellraiser, in space. Arrow has the whole franchise covered.
dir. David R. Ellis
S-Tier Criterion 4K. A family sequel that somehow ended up in the Criterion Collection discussion. Physical media collectors want everything on disc.
dir. Reginald Hudlin
S-Tier Criterion 4K for the 35th anniversary. The announcement caused a minor riot because everyone was expecting Eyes Wide Shut instead. People want the cover to pull from 90s graphic design rather than something refined and contemporary. The original Blu-ray was a MOD release that was really hard to find in stores.
dir. James Ivory
S-Tier Cohen Media Group 4K. Merchant Ivory's best-known film with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. Cohen's transfer looks good, and people have been asking for more Merchant Ivory in the Criterion Collection.
Cohen Media Group · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Jonathan Darby
Jackson and Helen are in love and about to have their first child when they move in with Jackson's mother, Martha, in order to take care of the family estate. But all is not well in this household. Martha is jealous of her son's affection for Helen, and, despite her Southern smile, she's starting to act strangely. As Helen tries to create a happy home life, Martha attempts to divide the family so that Jackson will become hers alone.
dir. Jim Gillespie
S-Tier Sony 4K. A new limited edition steelbook at $55 USD landed with serious pushback from collectors who don't think this is a $55 movie. The standard 4K has been available for a while and the discs are presumably identical. 88 Films also put out a UK trilogy box set if you want all three films together.
dir. John Carpenter
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Carpenter's Lovecraftian horror, and the Arrow limited edition sold out fast. People who buy direct from Arrow have had fulfillment issues, so the recommendation is to order from OrbitDVD or Diabolik instead. Alan Wake 2 players keep drawing parallels to the Sutter Cane storyline.
dir. Adrian Lyne
S-Tier Kino Lorber 4K. Adrian Lyne's million-dollar proposition with Redford, Moore, and Harrelson. Kino's transfer is decent for a 90s catalog title, though this isn't the Lyne film people tend to seek out first.
Kino Lorber · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Quentin Tarantino
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Tarantino's most underrated film. He personally signed off on the 4K restoration and vetoed an earlier release because it wasn't good enough, which tells you how much he cares about this one. Comparison shots show a real upgrade from the Blu-ray. Imprint also put out an Australian release at their usual eyebrow-raising price.
Lionsgate · 4K + Blu-ray
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Adrian Lyne's nightmare horror with Tim Robbins. There's a persistent Criterion wish-list energy around this title, and someone insists there used to be a laserdisc edition. The steelbook artwork is really nice. If Studiocanal ever separates from their Lionsgate deal, a boutique edition could happen. For now the Lionsgate 4K is it.
dir. William Friedkin
When a prominent art dealer is found murdered, the man's death leads to an intriguing investigation steeped in sex, corruption and crime. District Attorney David Corelli gets assigned to the case and discovers that a key suspect is his ex-lover Katrina Gavin, a beautiful psychologist who has settled down with his old friend and peer. As Corelli gets deeper into the case, he uncovers dark secrets with far-reaching implications.
dir. Cameron Crowe
S-Tier Sony 4K. Cameron Crowe's sports agent film with Tom Cruise. Sony's transfer is decent for a mid-90s studio comedy, though there isn't much collector energy around this title on its own.
dir. Abel Ferrara
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Abel Ferrara's crime film with Walken. Lionsgate put out a re-release with a steelbook that collectors found ugly, and most people are happy sticking with their Arrow or StudioCanal versions. The 4-hour documentary included with the Arrow release is almost as good as the film itself.
dir. Mathieu Kassovitz
S-Tier BFI 4K. Kassovitz's 1995 French film about police brutality. The Criterion 4K announcement was a relief for North American collectors who had been paying inflated import prices for the BFI disc. The film still feels current, and first-time viewers keep calling it a masterpiece.
BFI · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. John McTiernan
A-Tier Sony Pictures 4K. Coppola's Dracula with Gary Oldman. A small horror collection staple.
dir. Mike Figgis
S-Tier Shout Factory 4K. Cage's best performance, and people had been asking Criterion for this for years. The existing Sandpiper Blu-ray was dated and out of print, so the Shout 4K was a relief. StudioCanal has a 30th anniversary edition coming too. The cinematography looks better than people expected on this kind of low-budget 90s drama.
dir. John Sayles
S-Tier Criterion 4K. John Sayles' Texas border mystery. One of the best Criterion releases of 2024 by audience vote, with people calling it Sayles' masterpiece. Works as a crime film, a history lesson, and a folk tale all at once.
Criterion Collection
dir. Clive Barker
S-Tier Shout Factory 4K. Clive Barker's detective horror from 1995. Thin current signal, but the original pressing has become an OOP target for people who missed it.
dir. David Lynch
S-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Lynch's 1997 film, and the Criterion 4K with a Janus restoration has been confirmed. People immediately dropped their Kino Lorber carts when the news broke. The Mulholland Drive 4K from Criterion/StudioCanal was incredible, so expectations are high.
StudioCanal
dir. Spike Lee
S-Tier Imprint 4K. Spike Lee's Malcolm X, and the 4K has one of the largest file sizes for any movie on disc. Three different 4K releases exist from Criterion, Icon, and Imprint, with Imprint having the best A/V quality overall including the original stereo mix. Criterion has better extras and shelf presence. Angela Bassett weeping over Denzel at the end still destroys people.
Imprint · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. William Lustig
S-Tier Blue Underground 4K. William Lustig's sequel with some insane chase sequences that clearly didn't have permits. Blue Underground priced both Maniac Cop 4Ks at $30 USD each, which people found fair compared to what Shout Factory charges for a single standard Blu-ray.
Blue Underground · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Alan Smithee, William Lustig
S-Tier Blue Underground 4K. The third Maniac Cop, directed under the Alan Smithee pseudonym. No relevant collector discussion beyond existing as part of the Blue Underground Maniac Cop set.
dir. Kenneth Branagh
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein with De Niro as the creature. Arrow's 4K was $14.95 USD at Hamilton Book, and the Zavvi exclusive steelbook is a design standout. People project this one, which is a good sign for the transfer. Branagh going full operatic with the material divides viewers.
dir. Joe Dante
Joe Dante's love letter to William Castle and atomic-age creature features getting a 4K from Shout Factory. S-Tier transfer and the early response is all positive. One of those films that never had a bad word said about it but somehow never got a proper release until now.
dir. Barry Sonnenfeld
S-Tier Sony 4K. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the alien buddy comedy. Sony's steelbook got a 25th anniversary reprint, and PleasRewind had a restock that sold out fast. The disc stacking inside multi-film sets has been a complaint, with MIB being one of the titles affected.
dir. Allen Hughes, Albert Hughes
S-Tier Criterion 4K. The Hughes Brothers' film about growing up in Watts. Criterion's announcement was part of a wave of Black cinema releases alongside Deep Cover and the Melvin Van Peebles set. The cover art was praised as really good. Vantiva manufacturing QC issues have been affecting Criterion discs, with scratched new discs being reported across multiple titles.
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Cronenberg's Burroughs adaptation with a perfect 5.0 specs score. Arrow's 4K releases have a reputation for better encoding than Criterion's equivalents. The Turbine release also exists for European collectors. Worth knowing this is deeply weird Cronenberg before pressing play.
S-Tier Kino Lorber 4K. Peter Hyams' 1990 thriller with Gene Hackman on a train. No relevant collector discussion around the 4K.
dir. Oliver Stone
Shout Factory 4K with a solid transfer, but the 4K disc is Director's Cut only. If you prefer the Theatrical cut you're stuck with the included Blu-ray. People mis-file it as a Tarantino film even though Oliver Stone directed it.
S-Tier Criterion 4K. Carl Franklin's crime film, frequently paired with Lone Star as a recommendation. People describe it as brutal where Lone Star is more of a tall tale. The Criterion disc scores 4.0 overall. People who discovered it through the Criterion sale are finding it's one of the better neo-noir films of the 90s.
dir. Steven Soderbergh
S-Tier Kino Lorber 4K with a 4.5 score. Soderbergh's Elmore Leonard crime-romance with Clooney and Lopez. Not much dedicated collector discussion, though it appears in neo-noir and Soderbergh recommendation threads.
dir. Jonathan Demme
S-Tier Sony 4K. Demme's 1993 AIDS drama with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. Sony's 4K has a massive subtitle language list. Thin dedicated collector discussion around the 4K disc specifically, though the film regularly appears in collection photos.
dir. Kathryn Bigelow
S-Tier ICON 4K. Kathryn Bigelow's surf-heist film with Keanu and Swayze. The Best Buy steelbook is well-liked, and there's also a French Amazon import steelbook. One person blind-bought the 4K and it became one of their favorite action films.
dir. Stanley Tong Gwai-Lai
S-Tier 88 Films 4K. Jackie Chan's third Police Story with Michelle Yeoh. 88 Films released a standalone for people who already own the Criterion PS1-2 set. There are actually 8 films in the broader Police Story franchise, which surprises people.
88 Films
dir. Mike Nichols
S-Tier Shout Factory 4K. Mike Nichols' 1998 political satire with John Travolta. No relevant collector discussion around the 4K disc.
dir. Mick Garris
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The made-for-TV Psycho prequel from Mick Garris. No relevant collector discussion.
S-Tier Deltamac 4K with a 4.5 score. Tarantino's defining film, and the 4K announcement was met with enormous excitement. Someone ordered from Best Buy and received an unsealed copy with no disc inside, which became its own little saga. The steelbook front art was disliked while the back and inside were praised. Tarantino personally approved the transfer.
Deltamac · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Nicolas Winding Refn
Magnolia Home Entertainment putting Refn's debut on 4K. Second Sight already has an S-Tier release, so this one needs to bring something new. Most people discover this film backwards after Drive, and the disc crowd has been asking for a US-friendly release.
Second Sight Films · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Simon Wincer
S-Tier Shout Factory 4K. Tom Selleck in an Australian western. The 4K revealed that a young kid in the film is Ben Mendelsohn, which blew people's minds.
The transfer confused people because the fine grain from Kodak 50D stock looks almost like digital noise reduction to untrained eyes. It is not. Same stock as Titanic, and both looked suspiciously clean in 4K. Once people understood the film stock, the consensus shifted to calling it the best Tarantino 4K, with Pulp Fiction second. The Manta Lab steelbook artwork reveal got massive engagement. StudioCanal's disc itself is S-Tier.
StudioCanal · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Kevin Reynolds
Arrow's limited edition 4K with steelbook was a Zavvi exclusive that sold well internationally. The BBFC re-listing alongside True Romance and Last of the Mohicans got collectors excited about Arrow's expanding Warner catalog access. North American availability came later, which is the usual frustration with Zavvi-first releases.
dir. Irvin Kershner
Shout Factory's 4K is a massive upgrade over the old Blu-ray. The steelbook artwork is polarizing, with Robo's face getting roasted in the comments, and most people recommending the standard 4K release instead. Region availability is limited to US and Canada, which frustrated international collectors. The slipcovers for RoboCop 2 and 3 line up nicely on a shelf, even though 3 is still Blu-ray only.
dir. John Frankenheimer
A briefcase with undisclosed contents – sought by Irish terrorists and the Russian mob – makes its way into criminals' hands. An Irish liaison assembles a squad of mercenaries, or 'ronin', and gives them the thorny task of recovering the case.
dir. Tom Tykwer
Sony locked this into the Sony Pictures Classics box set for over a year before finally releasing it standalone in July 2024. The wait frustrated people who only wanted this one film and didn't care about the rest of the set. The standalone disc is S-Tier and multiple collectors use it as a demo disc for showing people what 4K HDR looks like. The 25th anniversary theatrical re-release helped build demand.
Currently only available as part of the Wes Anderson Archive box set from Criterion, and people keep asking when individual 4K releases are coming. The set runs half price during B&N and Criterion sales, which is when most people cave. Some disc quality issues reported, particularly with Royal Tenenbaums during the cemetery scene. Criterion replaces defective discs but it's been a recurring complaint.
dir. Martin Brest
Shout Factory's S-Tier 4K. Thin collector discussion but Pacino's performance is the reason this disc exists. One of those films that gets brought up in "underrated 4K" threads without anyone elaborating much beyond recommending it.
dir. Steven Spielberg
The black and white photography in 4K is consistently cited as reference quality for the format. The 30th Anniversary steelbook is the current edition most people are buying. Paramount's 4K handling of their prestige catalog has been strong, and this is one of the best examples. Not a film anyone watches casually, but the one everyone owns.
dir. Wes Craven
S-Tier transfer buzzing across four platforms this week. The franchise is split between Paramount and Lionsgate right now with Scream 7 and Scream 4 both announced, so collectors are budgeting for multiple labels.
Paramount Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
Paramount's steelbook matched the style of the first film's release, which collectors appreciated. The franchise set is one of those collections where people buy all of them or none of them. S-Tier transfer and the steelbook design with Ghostface on the back connecting to Scream 1 is a nice touch.
dir. Ang Lee
Sony's S-Tier 4K of Ang Lee's Jane Austen adaptation. Extremely thin collector discussion. The kind of disc that exists quietly in collections without generating threads.
Sony Pictures
dir. Scott Hicks
Geoffrey Rush's Oscar-winning pianist performance. Capelight's German 4K release is the only way to get it in high resolution. Extremely thin English-language collector discussion. The kind of prestige title that exists in 4K catalogs mostly by virtue of a European distributor filling the gap.
Germany Capelight · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Paul Verhoeven
Vinegar Syndrome's director-approved 4K restoration from Verhoeven's own color grade. Las Vegas neon, casinos, and stage costumes were made for HDR. People who dismissed Showgirls for years have been coming around to it as legitimate Verhoeven, on par with RoboCop and Starship Troopers for his fans. The NC-17 version is the definitive cut. Vinegar Syndrome would never edit that stuff out.
dir. Lance Mungia
Vinegar Syndrome's VSU line treated this as an event release. People who grew up renting the VHS were thrilled to see it jump directly to 4K. The limited set sold well during VS sales, and the 60-70% daily deal brought it down to impulse-buy territory. A cult film that inspired people to get into filmmaking because the DIY quality felt achievable. The Fallout games and rockabilly music comparison is the quickest way to describe it to someone who hasn't seen it.
dir. Nora Ephron
Part of the Columbia Classics Vol. 4 box set alongside Punch-Drunk Love and Starman. People who just bought the Criterion Punch-Drunk Love were annoyed. The box set gets praise for being one of the strongest selections since Vol. 1. Standalone availability may come eventually, but for now it's box set or nothing. The film itself has aged in interesting ways, with modern viewers noting the parasocial relationship dynamics more critically.
dir. Trey Parker
Paramount S-Tier 4K. Trey Parker and Matt Stone's animated musical got a proper 4K release alongside Team America. The UK release reportedly lacks Dolby Vision, which matters less for hand-drawn animation but still stings if you're paying import prices.
dir. David Koepp
Lionsgate S-Tier 4K. Kevin Bacon's 1999 haunted house film that got unfairly overshadowed by The Sixth Sense releasing the same year. The Lionsgate steelbook with lenticular slipcover is an Amazon exclusive that has restocked a few times through Please Rewind. Collectors who own it tend to recommend it enthusiastically.
dir. Stewart Raffill
An evil scientist implants the brain of a murdered high school student into an animatronic Tyrannosaurus, who later wreaks vengeance on the bullies who killed him, and is reunited with his sweetheart.
dir. Steve Barron
A quartet of humanoid turtles, trained by their mentor in ninjitsu, must learn to work together to face the menace of Shredder and the Foot Clan.
dir. Michael Pressman
The Turtles and the Shredder battle once again, this time for the last cannister of the ooze that created the Turtles, which Shredder wants to create an army of new mutants.
dir. Stuart Gillard
The four turtles travel back in time to the days of the legendary and deadly samurai in ancient Japan, where they train to perfect the art of becoming one. The turtles also assist a small village in an uprising.
Universal S-Tier 4K. The Dude abides in reference quality. One of those discs that gets bought on impulse every time someone posts it, and the comments are always just quotes from the film.
Exactly one year after young rock guitarist Eric Draven and his fiancée are brutally killed by a ruthless gang of criminals, Draven, watched over by a hypnotic crow, returns from the grave to exact revenge.
dir. Krzysztof Kieślowski
Véronique is a beautiful young French woman who aspires to be a renowned singer; Weronika lives in Poland, has a similar career goal and looks identical to Véronique, though the two are not related. The film follows both women as they contend with the ups and downs of their individual lives, with Véronique embarking on an unusual romance with Alexandre Fabbri, a puppeteer who may be able to help her with her existential issues.

dir. Robert Rodriguez
When some very creepy things start happening around school, the kids at Herrington High make the chilling discovery that confirms their worst suspicions: their teachers really are from another planet!
Criterion S-Tier 4K. Gilliam's most emotionally grounded film, and the Criterion transfer does it justice. The fantasy sequences in HDR really earn the tier rating.
dir. Peter Jackson
Once an architect, Frank Bannister now passes himself off as an exorcist of evil spirits. To bolster his facade, he claims his "special" gift is the result of a car accident that killed his wife. But what he does not count on is more people dying in the small town where he lives. As he tries to piece together the supernatural mystery of these killings, he falls in love with the wife of one of the victims and deals with a crazy FBI agent.

Warner S-Tier 4K. The train crash sequence is a demo scene and the new master is a massive upgrade from the Blu-ray. One of those catalog releases where the jump from the old disc is obvious in the first five minutes.
dir. Francis Ford Coppola
In the midst of trying to legitimize his business dealings in 1979 New York and Italy, aging mafia don, Michael Corleone seeks forgiveness for his sins while taking a young protege under his wing.
Following the release of The Godfather Part III in 1990, Coppola, Barry Malkin, and Walter Murch edited the three Godfather movies into chronological order. As had the earlier compilations, this film incorporated scenes that are not part of the theatrical releases.
dir. Frank Darabont
Warner S-Tier 4K. The Green Mile steelbook kept selling out at Gruv and getting restocked, with people stuck on backorders for weeks. The Darabont/King emotional gut-punch lands differently at this resolution, and the HDR gives the prison interiors depth the old Blu-ray flattened.
dir. Stephen Frears

But with the tyrannical King Louis using his power to wreak havoc in the kingdom while his twin brother, Philippe, remains imprisoned, the Musketeers reunite to abduct Louis and replace him with Philippe.
dir. Chuck Russell
Stanley Ipkiss, an insecure banker who has lost his zest for life stumbles upon an ancient mask, that turns him into a confident suave cartoon-like character who upsets his ordinary life.
dir. Luc Besson
The 4K existed before this, buried inside the Luc Besson 9-film box set from Sony last November. Both the 148-minute US cut and the 158-minute international version, Dolby Vision, Atmos. Now Gaumont is giving it a proper standalone release in June with a steelbook illustrated by Flore Maquin and a wild Fnac-exclusive 6-disc edition that includes a vinyl soundtrack and a 232-page making-of book. The big question for importers is subtitles. The film was shot in English, but French releases have a history of forced French subs or swapped opening sequences. English subs are listed on the French Amazon page, which is encouraging. Sony holds the US rights and StudioCanal has the UK, so a Region A standalone may or may not follow. Collectors who grabbed the Besson box already have the disc, but anyone waiting for a single release finally has a date.

Universal S-Tier 4K. The March release rumors turned out to be accurate. DreamWorks hand-drawn animation in HDR is something people were quietly hoping for.
A mysterious woman comes to compete in a quick-draw elimination tournament, in a town taken over by a notorious gunman.
A rule-bound head butler's world of manners and decorum in the household he maintains is tested by the arrival of a housekeeper who falls in love with him in post-WWI Britain. The possibility of romance and his master's cultivation of ties with the Nazi cause challenge his carefully maintained veneer of servitude.
Arrow Video S-Tier 4K. The Arrow UK release is the definitive edition and the French steelbook went up for preorder around the same time. Hopkins' Lecter scenes get even more unsettling with the higher resolution.

The 4K theatrical rerelease renewed attention right before the disc hit. The Zavvi "What's In The Box?" edition at $98 USD was roasted immediately, with one comment offering to put their DVD in a cardboard box with Walmart air fresheners instead. The standard 4K packaging also took heat for the case design, prompting custom case inserts. None of that matters because the A-Tier transfer on this film is exceptional. The dark interiors and rain-soaked exteriors test any display setup. Fincher's 30th anniversary restoration is the definitive home version.

Sony replaced one of the songs at a party scene due to licensing issues, swapping the Suicide Machines track for something generic. Collectors noticed because the song is meant to sound like it's actually playing at the party, so changing it changes the entire feel of the scene. Sony didn't announce the swap, which is typical for major studios. Still locked into the Sony Classics box set for standalone seekers, with eBay copies running around $35 USD.

Kino Lorber's 4K comes from a new scan of the original camera negative with Dolby Vision. People waited years for this one and the transfer doesn't disappoint. The ensemble cast (Redford, Poitier, Aykroyd, Phoenix) makes it one of those films that's better than it has any right to be.
88 Films A-Tier 4K. The boutique packaging from 88 Films landed well, and the disc looks good for a mid-90s sci-fi horror title. Collector interest is light but the people who own it seem happy with the release.

Sony A-Tier 4K. Verhoeven's satirical military sci-fi gets a real workout in HDR, especially the bug battle sequences where the dust and plasma colors have space to breathe. The 25th anniversary DV steelbook was limited to the US, which frustrated international collectors. The film continues to get reappraised as satire rather than straight action.

B-Tier from Paramount on a film that deserves better. The steelbook has been commanding high resale prices, with some listings hitting $200 USD. Sony taking over Disney's disc production created temporary OOP situations across Paramount's catalog too, and Saving Private Ryan availability fluctuated. D-Tier Lionsgate 4K and a famously bad transfer. The steelbook artwork is great and sells well, but the disc inside is one of the worst 4K presentations of a major film. People buy the steelbook planning to swap the disc if a better version ever comes out.

D-Tier 4K that caused a lot of frustration. Someone sold theirs for a dollar and the photo went kind of viral. A comparison with a Spanish Blu-ray showed the bootleg had more skin texture in several shots. There are defenders, but the consensus leans negative.
