This Week in 4K

341 posts across 6 communities · updated March 11, 2026

The James Cameron 4K discourse is bad and getting worse on r/4kbluray. T2 on DVD is reportedly more watchable than the 4K on an 85-inch OLED, and True Lies buyers are posting "wait, is this a bad transfer?" two days after it arrived. Cameron personally oversees these releases and his own fanbase is calling them AI-upscaled garbage. Criterion's March drop is landing at the same time and the mood on r/criterion is the complete opposite: digipak photos everywhere, screencaps already up, people building lists for the next B&N sale.

One Thing to Watch

Zavvi is now taking payment at time of order instead of at dispatch. Half the thread reads it as a cash flow problem. Half reads it as anti-bot. Someone mentions they've spent 'literal thousands' there precisely because no upfront payment made pre-orders feel free. That's gone now. If Zavvi is in trouble, exclusive pre-orders go with it.

Deals

Barnes and Noble 50% off is the sale that actually moves physical media. No Other Choice limited deluxe 4K pre-order dropped at $70 USD. Top comment: 'Jeez, for $70 I really hope there IS another choice.' Someone else wants Lee Byung-hun to come out of the disc and personally thank them. Eraser 30th anniversary steelbook is on Gruv for $33 USD.

What People Are Buying

Killers of the Flower Moon and Sentimental Value are moving. Interstellar went via WeET Collection. Hackers and Survive Style 5+ are the boutique pickups. The Conversation, Network, and 12 Angry Men keep appearing in the same wishlists. Somewhere in Time is an actual purchase this week, people importing it to Ireland. Army of Darkness has intent but the 4K is theatrical-only and the encode is contested. Trainspotting: the Criterion color grade looks nothing like the Lionsgate and people can't agree if that's a fix or a choice.

Most Debated high comment-to-upvote ratio

The Criterion vs BFI for Kurosawa thread has no winner. Seven Samurai has a BFI 4K that people find too contrasty and a Criterion 4K people find too flat, and the subtitle translations are different enough that it's a separate argument on top of the picture quality one. The consensus, if there is one: BFI remastered Blu-ray for Seven Samurai, Criterion 4K for Yojimbo and Sanjuro. Most people end up with both anyway.
