The bold color lighting and set design are the whole appeal on disc. Copies have turned up at Disc Replay for around $39.99 USD, which is a good price for an Arrow LE. S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Stallone's cop film. Arrow packaged it well.
dir. Edward Berger
Universal S-Tier 4K. The 4K transfer pulls out the red robes and production design in a way the theatrical presentation couldn't. The Catholic pageantry gets a lot of screen time and HDR makes every cardinal's vestment land differently.

Umbrella Entertainment · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. John Carpenter
S-Tier from Shout Factory. There are multiple packaging options but the discs are identical across the standard edition, steelbook, and collector's edition. If you're new to this one and the black levels look crushed, that's normal. It was shot almost entirely at night on a low budget, and Carpenter himself has said that's just how it looks. The Eagle Pictures Italian release is a better-looking transfer for anyone willing to import. The steelbook art is a love-it-or-hate-it situation, some people think it looks more Mad Max than Snake Plissken.
dir. Guy Hamilton
S-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Agatha Christie with Peter Ustinov as Poirot. StudioCanal's Christie releases have been consistently good.
Vinegar Syndrome S-Tier 4K. Cronenberg's virtual reality body horror got the Vinegar Syndrome treatment and it's one of the label's best transfers. The slab packaging is the usual VS quality.
dir. Stanley Kubrick
Criterion put this on 4K in November 2025 and it landed as a new standard for the format. Rare Waves has a UK Limited Edition Steelbook for 2026 using the same Warner transfer, which is the pickup for non-US collectors.

dir. Alfred Hitchcock
S-Tier Carlotta Films 4K. Argento's giallo. Carlotta's Italian horror releases on 4K have been strong.
dir. Andrew Niccol

dir. Stephen Kay
S-Tier BFI 4K. Michael Caine in Newcastle. BFI's British crime catalog is strong.
dir. Ishirō Honda
The 1954 original. Criterion's S-Tier 4K preserves the grain of the black-and-white negative and the restoration gives Honda's creature feature the clarity its early special effects deserve.
dir. Iain Softley
A teacher showed it to class in the late '90s and Angelina Jolie's nipple ended the experiment. Matthew Lillard not getting top billing. A 14.4 modem and 8 MB of RAM. Nobody is watching Hackers for the first time. They're buying it because it's their movie.
dir. Ridley Scott
S-Tier Universal 4K. Hopkins as Lecter in Florence. Universal's catalog 4K.
dir. John Woo

dir. Alan Smithee, Kevin Yagher
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The fourth Hellraiser, in space. Arrow has the whole franchise covered.
dir. John McNaughton
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. John McNaughton's serial killer film. Arrow treats this with the same care as their horror classics.
dir. Ruggero Deodato
S-Tier 88 Films 4K. Severin had quality issues with this disc and quietly mailed out replacements with zero explanation. People were getting random Blu-rays in the mail and had no idea why. The replacement program also covered Hell of the Living Dead, which had a color problem where reds looked purple. If you're buying secondhand, make sure you're getting the corrected disc.
dir. Jonathan Darby
Jackson and Helen are in love and about to have their first child when they move in with Jackson's mother, Martha, in order to take care of the family estate. But all is not well in this household. Martha is jealous of her son's affection for Helen, and, despite her Southern smile, she's starting to act strangely. As Helen tries to create a happy home life, Martha attempts to divide the family so that Jackson will become hers alone.
dir. Jim Gillespie
S-Tier Sony 4K. A new limited edition steelbook at $55 USD landed with serious pushback from collectors who don't think this is a $55 movie. The standard 4K has been available for a while and the discs are presumably identical. 88 Films also put out a UK trilogy box set if you want all three films together.
dir. Vincenzo Natali
After hearing a child screaming for help from the green depths of a vast field of tall grass, Becky, a pregnant woman, and Cal, her brother, park their car near a mysterious abandoned church and enter the field, discovering that they are not alone and, for some reason, they are unable to escape a completely inextricable vegetable labyrinth.
dir. Quentin Tarantino
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Tarantino's most underrated film. He personally signed off on the 4K restoration and vetoed an earlier release because it wasn't good enough, which tells you how much he cares about this one. Comparison shots show a real upgrade from the Blu-ray. Imprint also put out an Australian release at their usual eyebrow-raising price.
When a prominent art dealer is found murdered, the man's death leads to an intriguing investigation steeped in sex, corruption and crime. District Attorney David Corelli gets assigned to the case and discovers that a key suspect is his ex-lover Katrina Gavin, a beautiful psychologist who has settled down with his old friend and peer. As Corelli gets deeper into the case, he uncovers dark secrets with far-reaching implications.
dir. Chad Stahelski
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. The one that started it all. Every John Wick film has a strong 4K transfer, and the set is a GRUV sale regular. The Continental club shootout is still one of the best neon-lit action sequences on disc. Individual steelbook versions exist for collectors who want matching artwork across the series.
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Chapter 2 is where the Wick world-building really kicks in. New York and Rome in neon-soaked HDR look incredible. The entire John Wick set keeps getting singled out as some of the best-looking discs in people's collections, and every chapter has competing steelbook exclusives from different retailers.
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Parabellum is the John Wick film people seem to own three copies of. Walmart's exclusive steelbook had people buying a third version of a movie they already owned twice. The knife fight sequence and the desert photography in HDR look great.
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. The best-looking disc in the John Wick series. The location cinematography across New York, Wadi Rum, France, Germany, and Japan is where HDR really pays off. Multiple steelbook exclusives dropped from different retailers with different artwork, and collectors were buying all of them.
dir. Todd Phillips
S-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. Phoenix's Joker on a well-regarded disc. Someone made custom box art that looks like Saul Bass designed it, which got more attention than the official packaging. The film's 4K got caught up in the broader conversation about steelbook scarcity and artificial demand after several releases started selling out immediately.
S-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. The Joker musical sequel that nobody asked for. The box makes a laughing sound when you open it, which, depending on your perspective, is either fun or insulting. Most people expected it to be awful based on reception, and the collectors who actually watched it found it less terrible than advertised. The King of Comedy connection is what Criterion fans pull on.
dir. Kathryn Bigelow
S-Tier Shout Factory 4K. Kathryn Bigelow's submarine thriller with Harrison Ford. Shout picked it up for 4K. Not much collector excitement, with one person calling it a sleep aid.
Shout! Factory
dir. David Worth, Mark DiSalle
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Van Damme in Thailand, kicking bamboo trees and passing out from pain. The 4K finally includes the international cut on disc, which was a big deal for fans who'd been stuck with the US theatrical version. The steelbook packaging got specific compliments, and Bloodsport fans immediately started asking about their turn.
S-Tier Kino Lorber 4K. Early Kubrick, black and white, 4:3 aspect ratio. People thought it was wild that this got a 4K release before Eyes Wide Shut. The transfer itself is clean. First-time viewers tend to approach it as a curiosity piece rather than essential Kubrick, which is fair for a 1955 B-movie noir.
Kino Lorber · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Abel Ferrara
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Abel Ferrara's crime film with Walken. Lionsgate put out a re-release with a steelbook that collectors found ugly, and most people are happy sticking with their Arrow or StudioCanal versions. The 4-hour documentary included with the Arrow release is almost as good as the film itself.
dir. Jean-Pierre Melville
After carrying out a flawlessly planned hit, Jef Costello, a contract killer with samurai instincts, finds himself caught between a persistent police investigator and a ruthless employer, and not even his armor of fedora and trench coat can protect him.
dir. David Lynch
S-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Lynch's 1997 film, and the Criterion 4K with a Janus restoration has been confirmed. People immediately dropped their Kino Lorber carts when the news broke. The Mulholland Drive 4K from Criterion/StudioCanal was incredible, so expectations are high.
StudioCanal
dir. Rose Glass
S-Tier Plaion Pictures 4K. Rose Glass' crime romance with Kristen Stewart. A24 released the 4K after the Blu-ray had already shipped, which annoyed people who bought the Blu-ray a week earlier. One of the better A24 4K releases. The Rose Glass commentary is the draw for people who liked Saint Maud.
dir. Ti West
S-Tier Second Sight Films 4K. Ti West's third film in the X trilogy. People are holding out for either a steelbook or a trilogy box set. A German steelbook from Capelight exists with embossing. Second Sight has the limited edition for UK collectors. The X/Pearl/MaXXXine collector conversation is mostly about completing the set rather than this film individually.
dir. Bong Joon Ho
S-Tier Curzon Film 4K. Bong Joon Ho's serial killer masterpiece. The 4K remaster has a reputation for being too dark and green compared to the original South Korean Blu-ray, which has the more natural color timing. Multiple versions exist across regions. The Curzon release is the one most English-speaking collectors are buying, though the import shipping is steep.
Curzon Film · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Allen Hughes, Albert Hughes
S-Tier Criterion 4K. The Hughes Brothers' film about growing up in Watts. Criterion's announcement was part of a wave of Black cinema releases alongside Deep Cover and the Melvin Van Peebles set. The cover art was praised as really good. Vantiva manufacturing QC issues have been affecting Criterion discs, with scratched new discs being reported across multiple titles.
dir. Brad Bird
S-Tier Paramount 4K. Brad Bird's Mission Impossible entry with the Burj Khalifa sequence. The steelbook dropped to $14.89 USD on sale. People wish the IMAX aspect ratio expanded on the disc. Not a lot of dedicated discussion for this specific entry, though the MI franchise as a whole is well-collected.
dir. Dev Patel
S-Tier Universal 4K. Dev Patel's action film, and Universal's UK release had three banners across the top of the cover, which looked terrible. One of the more creative recent action films on disc.
After being attacked and raped twice in one day, a timid, mute seamstress becomes a violent agent of revenge for wronged women.
Lynch's death is still pulling people back to the Criterion disc. Someone picked it up at Barnes and Noble this week, and it sits on nearly every wishlist going into the Criterion flash sale. The Criterion 4K is S-Tier.
dir. Sidney Lumet
S-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Lumet's 1974 Agatha Christie all-star mystery, with Kino Lorber handling the US release. The 4K scores a 4.5 overall, and people were excited about more Lumet on the format. The US version was out of print and going for inflated prices before the new release.
dir. Patrick Lussier
S-Tier Scream Factory 4K. The 2009 3D slasher remake. Scream Factory's steelbook was available during their 13 Days sale, and DeepDiscount had it for $13 USD.
dir. Peter Hyams
S-Tier Kino Lorber 4K. Peter Hyams' 1990 thriller with Gene Hackman on a train. No relevant collector discussion around the 4K.
dir. Oliver Stone
Shout Factory 4K with a solid transfer, but the 4K disc is Director's Cut only. If you prefer the Theatrical cut you're stuck with the included Blu-ray. People mis-file it as a Tarantino film even though Oliver Stone directed it.
dir. Kelly Reichardt
S-Tier Criterion 4K. Kelly Reichardt's eco-thriller. No relevant collector discussion around the 4K specifically.
dir. Franck Khalfoun
When an unsuspecting woman stops at a remote gas station in the dead of night, she's made the plaything of a sociopath sniper with a secret vendetta. To survive, she must not only dodge his bullets and fight for her life, but also figure out who wants her dead and why.
dir. Guillermo del Toro
S-Tier Criterion 4K. Del Toro's noir with Bradley Cooper. The Criterion release includes the director's extended cut completely remastered in black and white with Dolby Vision, which del Toro considers the definitive version. The B&W version is what makes this 4K special.
dir. Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
S-Tier Criterion 4K. The Coens' best film by popular vote, and the 4K announcement generated enormous excitement. The scan comes in at 88.7 GB, which is enormous. Someone spotted a crew member hiding in the bushes during the river scene, which started a whole thing. People are waiting on There Will Be Blood and Assassination of Jesse James to complete the 2007 western trio.
S-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. Hitchcock's chase film with Cary Grant, scoring a perfect 5.0 overall. WB's protective steelbook packaging was praised as an industry standard others should follow. A World Cinema Library premium edition exists for the truly dedicated. To Catch a Thief is also coming to 4K, and people want Strangers on a Train and Dial M for Murder next.
Warner Bros. · 4K Ultra HD
S-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. Soderbergh's heist film, and the HDR is really good. Soderbergh is meticulous with digital tools but lets his older films look like film on disc, which collectors appreciate. The trilogy 4K set makes a good gift.
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Park Chan-wook's revenge film, scoring 4.5 overall. People keep asking for a Vengeance Trilogy set in Region A. Arrow has done a Deluxe Ultra Limited Edition with a 68-page book and 10+ hours of bonus material. A Zavvi steelbook went up quickly and Arrow was criticized for the packaging quality again. People want Criterion to do it, but Arrow has the rights and is actively releasing premium editions.
S-Tier Sony 4K. Tarantino's Hollywood love letter with Pitt and DiCaprio. The Netflix 4K stream vs. Blu-ray comparison went viral, showing how much streaming compresses the image. The Best Buy exclusive steelbook is a collector's item. Someone made custom poster art and inserts that look professional. Tarantino fans are essentially confirmed to never get a Criterion release of any of his films.
S-Tier Criterion 4K. Carl Franklin's crime film, frequently paired with Lone Star as a recommendation. People describe it as brutal where Lone Star is more of a tall tale. The Criterion disc scores 4.0 overall. People who discovered it through the Criterion sale are finding it's one of the better neo-noir films of the 90s.
S-Tier Plaion Pictures 4K. Argento's opera house horror from 1987. Thin collector discussion on the 4K specifically, though it appears in haul posts.
dir. David Fincher
Fincher collectors hold onto this one and the steelbook has a steady second-hand market. The 4K disc delivers what you want from a Fincher film.
S-Tier Artificial Eye 4K. Bong Joon Ho's Palme d'Or winner, and the French debossed steelbook is gorgeous. The B&W version is included, and most people picked it up specifically for that. The "ass" in the middle of the steelbook text was pointed out and now nobody can unsee it.
Artificial Eye · 4K + Blu-ray
Trapped on her family’s isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like she’s seen in the movies, Pearl’s ambitions, temptations, and repressions collide.
dir. Michael Powell
S-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Michael Powell's 1960 horror that ended his career. The new 4K restoration played in art house theaters and the reception was strong. The old Blu-ray was never that good, so this is a meaningful upgrade. People love to point out this is better than Psycho, which came out the same year. Scorsese helped revive the film's reputation decades later.
dir. Yeon Sang-ho
S-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Train to Busan's sequel. Thin collector discussion, mostly appearing in pre-owned pickup posts.
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K with a 4.0 score. Argento's insect-horror from 1985 with Jennifer Connelly. Arrow and Synapse both released a version, and the only real difference is the box art, with the Synapse cover being widely considered worse. Argento collectors are buying Arrow's to match their other Argento boxes.
S-Tier ICON 4K. Kathryn Bigelow's surf-heist film with Keanu and Swayze. The Best Buy steelbook is well-liked, and there's also a French Amazon import steelbook. One person blind-bought the 4K and it became one of their favorite action films.
ICON · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Stanley Tong Gwai-Lai
S-Tier 88 Films 4K. Jackie Chan's third Police Story with Michelle Yeoh. 88 Films released a standalone for people who already own the Criterion PS1-2 set. There are actually 8 films in the broader Police Story franchise, which surprises people.
88 Films
dir. Brandon Cronenberg
S-Tier Second Sight Films 4K with a 4.5 score. Brandon Cronenberg's body-horror thriller, and one of the most underrated horror films of the 2020s. Second Sight's limited edition had people double-dipping from the basic US release. Someone's copy from Diabolik came signed by the director unexpectedly. Green Room is getting the same Second Sight 4K treatment.
dir. Dan Trachtenberg
S-Tier Disney 4K with a 4.5 score. The Predator prequel that was a streaming exclusive nobody expected to get a physical release. The Comanche dub is included, and collectors consider it a special extra. Dan Trachtenberg is now 3 for 3 with fans.
Walt Disney Studios · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Kim Tae-gon
Due to sudden deteriorating weather conditions, visibility on the Airport Bridge is severely impaired, leaving people stranded and at risk of the bridge collapsing due to a series of chain collisions and explosions. Amidst the chaos, the canine subjects "Echo" from the military experiment "Project Silence," who were being transported in secret, break free, and all human survivors become targets of relentless attacks.
S-Tier Universal 4K. Hitchcock's black-and-white photography has more detail at this resolution than the Blu-ray ever delivered, and the shower scene has never had this much information in it, for better or worse. The Bernard Herrmann score in lossless is half the reason the film still works as well as it does. Considered required viewing in any best-horror-discs discussion.
dir. Richard Franklin
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The Psycho sequel that's actually good. Arrow's release is the consensus pick over the Scream Factory and Universal versions. People looking for the best transfer are pointed to Arrow.
dir. Anthony Perkins
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The third Psycho, directed by Anthony Perkins himself. No relevant collector discussion around the 4K specifically.
dir. Mick Garris
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The made-for-TV Psycho prequel from Mick Garris. No relevant collector discussion.
S-Tier Deltamac 4K with a 4.5 score. Tarantino's defining film, and the 4K announcement was met with enormous excitement. Someone ordered from Best Buy and received an unsealed copy with no disc inside, which became its own little saga. The steelbook front art was disliked while the back and inside were praised. Tarantino personally approved the transfer.
Deltamac · 4K + Blu-ray
Reference quality transfer that people keep calling a system showcase. The courtyard detail jumps in 4K, and longtime fans say it feels like meeting old neighbors for the first time. Universal's Hitchcock 4K set is the way most people get it, and Gruv regularly discounts it to around $45 USD. Comments consistently call this one worth $50 USD on its own.
dir. Antony Hoffman
Arrow's Dolby Vision 4K is the reason to own this. The film itself splits people, half find it interesting, half find it forgettable, but the disc quality is not in question. Mission to Mars comparisons are inevitable and divisive. CGI does not hold up, which the HDR makes more obvious, not less.
dir. John Frankenheimer
Kino Lorber 4K of Frankenheimer's late-career thriller with Affleck. Showed up in an Amazon 3-for-2 deal, where the main complaint was Amazon shipping damaged copies. Thin collector interest beyond completionists and Frankenheimer fans.
dir. Lisa Joy
Nicolas Bannister, a rugged and solitary veteran living in a near-future Miami flooded by rising seas, is an expert in a dangerous occupation: he offers clients the chance to relive any memory they desire. His life changes when he meets a mysterious young woman named Mae. What begins as a simple matter of lost and found becomes a passionate love affair. But when a different client's memories implicate Mae in a series of violent crimes, Bannister must delve through the dark world of the past to uncover the truth about the woman he fell for.
The transfer confused people because the fine grain from Kodak 50D stock looks almost like digital noise reduction to untrained eyes. It is not. Same stock as Titanic, and both looked suspiciously clean in 4K. Once people understood the film stock, the consensus shifted to calling it the best Tarantino 4K, with Pulp Fiction second. The Manta Lab steelbook artwork reveal got massive engagement. StudioCanal's disc itself is S-Tier.
dir. René Clément
Plaion's S-Tier 4K with a Kino Lorber US release also incoming via Diabolik DVD. Charles Bronson in a René Clément French thriller. Zero Reddit discussion, which tracks for a 1970 Euro-thriller that most English-speaking collectors have never heard of. The disc exists for the people who already love it.
dir. Doug Liman
This is the original 1989 Swayze film, not the 2024 remake. Vinegar Syndrome's 4K from the original 35mm negative is the definitive version, and the BD-100 disc format means no compression compromises. Arrow also released their own version with different artwork that got criticism for being weaker than VS's cover. The VS edition runs $45 USD, which some people found steep for Road House, but the transfer quality is hard to argue with.
dir. Paul Verhoeven
Arrow's 4K transfer is called a reference disc for the format in collector circles. The grain structure is preserved, the practical effects are still effective, and the ED-209 stop-motion pops in a way it never did on Blu-ray. The 4K actually reveals too much for some people, like RoboCop's rubber chin guard and plastic armor textures. The original Arrow LE Blu-ray owners felt burned when the 4K came in identical packaging shortly after.

Part of the Hitchcock Classics Collection Volume 3, which has been discounted as low as $18 USD with coupons. Collectors consistently say the set is worth it for Rope and Frenzy alone. The biggest collector request is Dial M for Murder in 4K, followed by North By Northwest. The single-take technique makes this one interesting to revisit on a better display.
dir. Tom Tykwer
Sony locked this into the Sony Pictures Classics box set for over a year before finally releasing it standalone in July 2024. The wait frustrated people who only wanted this one film and didn't care about the rest of the set. The standalone disc is S-Tier and multiple collectors use it as a demo disc for showing people what 4K HDR looks like. The 25th anniversary theatrical re-release helped build demand.
Part of Universal's Hitchcock 4K rollout alongside Shadow of a Doubt and Rope. The black and white photography is preserved in its original 4:3 ratio. Underrated even among Hitchcock fans, with reviewers calling it vastly overlooked. The Statue of Liberty climax is the sequence everyone remembers.

When the rumored whereabouts of Osama bin Laden are revealed, the CIA readies a team of seasoned U.S. Navy SEALs for the mission of a lifetime. The SEAL Team bands together to complete their mission of justice in a riveting final showdown.
Part of Universal's 2022 Hitchcock 4K expansion alongside Saboteur and Rope. One of Hitchcock's best and consistently called underrated even by his own fans. The Wrong Man in 4K is the next Hitchcock request that keeps surfacing. Thin standalone discussion since most collectors buy it inside the Universal set.

Two competing 4K editions from Celluloid Dreams and 88 Films. The 88 Films Italian Collection has built a strong reputation for giallo and horror titles, and their version is comparable to the Celluloid Dreams release. Both have strong extras packages. A niche giallo that rewards collectors who dig into Italian genre cinema.
Celluloid Dreams · 4K Ultra HD
dir. M. Night Shyamalan
The HMV steelbook misspelled Shyamalan's name on the cover, which is both hilarious and telling. The original steelbook with metallic finish and debossed artwork is a $200 USD grail that people refuse to sell. The standard release artwork is universally hated. The film itself gets strong collector affection, and the S-Tier Disney 4K with archival features is well-stocked.

Scream Factory's S-Tier 4K of the controversial Santa slasher. The Imprint Parts 1 + 2 special edition is a massive package that surprised buyers with its size. The Lionsgate steelbook at over $50 USD got pushback on pricing. A seasonal purchase that reliably sells every October and December.

The 4K is a real upgrade over the Blu-ray, which had noticeable sharpening and DNR issues. The IMAX sequences are some of the sharpest footage you'll see on the format, and the 35mm scenes are a solid improvement too. Batman Begins is the disappointing one on 4K, but Dark Knight and Rises both look great. The trilogy steelbook set has been through multiple exclusive editions and the artwork reveals always get a lot of attention.

Veteran Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan is a man haunted by his failure to save President Kennedy while serving protection detail in Dallas. Thirty years later, a man calling himself "Booth" threatens the life of the current President, forcing Horrigan to come back to protection detail to confront the ghosts from his past.
A-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Tarantino's WWII film with Christoph Waltz's Oscar-winning turn. Arrow's limited edition with the Complete Basterds packaging is the collector's version. It's not a new scan, but at $17-18 USD on sale nobody seems to care. Zavvi had a full box set with extra goodies for those who wanted to go all in.
dir. Joseph Zito
A-Tier Vinegar Syndrome 4K. Chuck Norris drives through a house. That is the movie. Vinegar Syndrome loaded it with extras, which is more than this film probably deserves and exactly what VS collectors want.
A-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The fifth Bourne film and the weakest of the Matt Damon entries. The whole Bourne 4K set has a problem with the first film's transfer, which was pulled from an old HD master with heavy noise reduction and actually looks worse than the Blu-ray. The later films are fine. The set goes on GRUV's 2-for-$22 USD deals regularly.
dir. Adam Marcus
A-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The Friday the 13th entry nobody likes but everyone buys anyway. Arrow teased Jason X alongside this, and the assumption is Freddy vs. Jason is eventually coming too. The new cover art is taking some getting used to after decades of the VHS artwork burned into everyone's memory.
dir. Steven Spielberg
A-Tier Universal 4K. Considered one of the best 4K remasters from the 70s, and the contrast to how badly the original Star Wars films have been treated is a favorite collector talking point. The ocean photography and Amity night scenes look fantastic on a modern display.
dir. Jeannot Szwarc
Police chief Brody must protect the citizens of Amity after a second monstrous shark begins terrorizing the waters.
dir. Joe Johnston
A-Tier Universal 4K. The weakest Jurassic Park, but Universal's new Dolby Vision remaster actually fixed the color timing issues from the original 4K. The old transfer had a weird tan cast that the new version corrected. There's debate about whether the new Atmos remix is too heavy-handed compared to the original DTS-X mix. The remastered disc was $14.99 USD on Amazon pre-order, which is basically impulse territory.
Universal Pictures · Steelbook
A-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Kill Bill's second volume. The steelbook art reveal alongside Vol. 1 and Jackie Brown generated huge excitement, though the combined pricing for all three had people doing some uncomfortable math. Tarantino signed off on the restorations personally and vetoed an earlier release timeline.

A-Tier MVD Entertainment 4K. Tsui Hark directs Van Damme in a movie about exploding jeans. MVD released this alongside Lionheart for Van Damme fans.
MVD Entertainment · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Joel Anderson
A-Tier Umbrella Entertainment 4K. Australian found-footage horror that has a serious cult following. Second Sight's new release is the one collectors are going after, and people ordering through Diabolik are bundling it with other pre-orders.
A-Tier Criterion 4K. Melville's heist film, with the final safe-cracking sequence being the showcase. Often described as a time capsule of 70s France that happens to also be a solid thriller.
A-Tier Kino Lorber 4K. Melville's noir about informers. The UK Blu-ray was the previous go-to before Kino's 4K arrived, and the cafe scenes benefit most from the cleaner master.
dir. Richard Donner
A-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. WB is doing the first Lethal Weapon solo in 4K, and everyone is waiting for the inevitable quadrilogy box set before buying in. The original Blu-ray was rough, so this remaster with Atmos is a real upgrade. The steelbook is $29.99 USD on GRUV, and the standard edition art actually looks better than the steel.
dir. Joe Giannone
A-Tier Vinegar Syndrome 4K. The 1981 slasher, not to be confused with Madman Films the Australian distributor. Vinegar Syndrome gave it a proper release. Most of the signal around "Madman" in collector subs actually refers to the Madman Films Kurosawa box set, not this horror film.
A-Tier Blue Underground 4K. The 2012 Elijah Wood remake shot almost entirely in first person. Blue Underground's HDR transfer is well-liked, and the disc has been found at McKay's for around $20 USD with slip.
dir. John Schlesinger
A-Tier Kino Lorber 4K. The Dustin Hoffman/Laurence Olivier thriller with the dentist scene. Kino's transfer scores a 4.5 overall. Not a lot of dedicated 4K collector discussion, though it comes up in thriller recommendation threads.
dir. Martin Brest
A-Tier Shout Factory 4K. De Niro and Charles Grodin's buddy road movie. Shout Factory's transfer got decent reviews with good Dolby Vision and consistent grain. Some mixed word of mouth before release had people setting low expectations, which the disc cleared.
A-Tier Paramount 4K. Spielberg's sci-fi thriller, and the 4K announcement alongside Catch Me If You Can was one of the biggest Paramount reveals of the year. The Catch Me If You Can artwork was universally panned while Minority Report's was better received. The steelbook inner photo is oddly from a 2009 Empire magazine shoot, not the film itself.
dir. Rob Reiner
A-Tier Kino Lorber 4K. Rob Reiner's Stephen King adaptation with Kathy Bates, and Kino's transfer scores 4.5 overall. The disc was available for $15.65 USD on Amazon and people jumped on it at that price. Collectors are still waiting for Arrow's Carrie 4K to pair with this.
Kino Lorber
dir. Christopher McQuarrie
A-Tier Paramount 4K. McQuarrie's MI7, and Paramount re-released it with "Part One" removed from the title after the planned two-parter structure changed. The US steelbook design didn't match the silver and grey style of entries 1-6, which bothered collectors going for a matching set. The UK Zavvi steelbook was better-looking but pricey at around CAD imported.
A-Tier Paramount 4K. The Final Reckoning wraps up the two-part story that started with Dead Reckoning. The steelbook art was called bland and lacking color, and a Polish exclusive briefly appeared before getting swapped for the US version. Mixed reception on the film itself, with people saying 45 minutes of great action was buried in two hours of exposition.
dir. J.J. Abrams
A-Tier Paramount 4K. J.J. Abrams' MI entry with Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villain, and part of the matching 1-6 steelbook re-release set from July. People are building custom display cases for the MI steelbook collection. The series artwork consistency became a talking point when Fast & Furious was cited as the standard for keeping steelbook art matching across entries.
dir. Lucio Fulci

When a mute makeup/special effects artist working on a low-budget slasher film gets locked in a dilapidated Moscow movie studio late one night, she thinks she witnesses the making of a snuff film. Thus begins a night of terror.
A-Tier Criterion 4K. Romero's original zombie film. Criterion treats it like the landmark it is.
dir. Dan Gilroy
A-Tier Shout Factory 4K. Dan Gilroy's LA crime thriller with Jake Gyllenhaal. The steelbook cover art was universally hated, which is frustrating for a film this good. It's a 2K digital intermediate upscale, but the Drive 4K upscale turned out well so there's hope.
A-Tier Sony 4K. Luc Besson's assassin film with Anne Parillaud. Sony and StudioCanal both have steelbook versions, and the consensus is that StudioCanal's is the better package if you're region-free. The Sony version dropped the Spanish subtitles and audio track that StudioCanal kept.
dir. Cary Joji Fukunaga

dir. Dan Berk, Robert Olsen
A-Tier Paramount 4K. The 2025 Jack Quaid dental thriller. Collectors noted that advertising 30 minutes of special features is embarrassing compared to what DVDs used to include.
dir. Albert Pintó
A-Tier Criterion 4K. Albert Pinto's survival thriller. Turns up in B&N shelf photos and Arrow wishlist discussions without a dedicated 4K buzz campaign behind it.
A-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. The third Ocean's, and someone flagged the transfer for heavy DNR and overblown HDR highlights.
A-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. The least popular Ocean's film with no relevant collector discussion about the transfer.
dir. Paul Thomas Anderson
Availability is the story now. Preorders go back to September 2025 and restocks sell through fast. OrbitDVD and The Movie Room might have copies if the usual places are gone. A-Tier transfer and PTA's name are doing the work.

dir. Jackie Chan
Eureka A-Tier 4K. Part of the Police Story trilogy set that collectors say is worth the upgrade. The theatrical cut transfer is a real improvement over previous releases.
A-Tier Decal 4K. Soderbergh's 2025 haunted house film shot on a low budget. The single-camera POV gimmick works better than it should, and the disc preserves the shallow focus work.

A-Tier Eagle Pictures 4K. The third Rambo. No relevant collector discussion around the 4K.
Eagle Pictures
A-Tier Eagle Pictures 4K. Stallone's second Rambo outing. The First Blood individual steelbook announcement was a bigger deal, with a Walmart exclusive remastered version. The Everythingblu premium set exists for serious collectors. Most of the Rambo collector energy is focused on First Blood.
dir. John Irvin
A-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Arnold's underrated 1986 action film. The StudioCanal steelbook is nice-looking, and people keep asking for Commando, a T2 remaster, and more Arnold on 4K. The previous StudioCanal Blu-ray looked bad, so the 4K is a real step up.
dir. Robert Schwentke
Lionsgate 4K, 2-disc set. Goes on sale regularly at Best Buy and Amazon for around $10 USD. The transfer is fine for a mid-budget action comedy and the cast of Willis, Malkovich, Mirren, and Freeman makes it an easy catalog pickup.
dir. Wes Craven
An overnight flight to Miami quickly becomes a battle for survival when Lisa realizes her seatmate plans to use her as part of a chilling assassination plot against the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. If she refuses to cooperate, her own father will be killed. As the miles tick by, she's in a race against time to find a way to warn the potential victims before it's too late.
Shout Factory's 4K landed with a censorship controversy. The theatrical cut had a scene edited out, which Shout acknowledged publicly. Comments split between people defending the director's choice and people arguing the theatrical version should match the original theatrical release. The Chronicles of Riddick 4K from Arrow also circulates in the same collector circles. Disc quality itself is strong.
The announcement generated more debate about the film's quality than excitement about the disc. Oliver Stone hinted that Platoon is getting a proper 4K redo from Shout Factory, which overshadowed Savages entirely in the same news cycle. The film is polarizing but the A-Tier transfer handles the saturated jungle color palette well.
The 4K theatrical rerelease renewed attention right before the disc hit. The Zavvi "What's In The Box?" edition at $98 USD was roasted immediately, with one comment offering to put their DVD in a cardboard box with Walmart air fresheners instead. The standard 4K packaging also took heat for the case design, prompting custom case inserts. None of that matters because the A-Tier transfer on this film is exceptional. The dark interiors and rain-soaked exteriors test any display setup. Fincher's 30th anniversary restoration is the definitive home version.
dir. Antoine Fuqua
Paramount released this as a 15th Anniversary 4K Steelbook in March 2022 and followed with a standard 4K edition in May 2023. The Steelbook is in the discount phase now, showing up on Amazon for $8 USD to $16 USD, though the $16 USD listing has a "frequently returned" warning so condition is hit or miss.
Paramount's A-Tier 4K is frequently one of the first discs new OLED owners buy. The $10.99 Paramount combo releases in DVD-sized cases generated heated debate because they strip special features and feel cheap, but at that price people grabbed them anyway. Scorsese citing I Walked with a Zombie as a major influence on this film is the kind of deep-cut connection that Criterion collectors appreciate. The steelbook is a frequent haul photo staple.
dir. Denis Villeneuve
Consistently called reference quality. The Dolby Atmos sound design gets specific praise, with the border tunnel sequence being the demo moment everyone mentions. Every Villeneuve film in 4K is considered excellent, and Sicario might be the best example. The Best Buy steelbook vs. Target steelbook debate has been going for years, with opinions split roughly evenly. Often found for $5 USD in Walmart bins, which might be the best value in all of 4K collecting.

dir. Jan de Bont
The steelbook preorder keeps selling out and restocking, with Amazon canceling some orders and Walmart becoming the backup plan. A-Tier transfer that people cite alongside Dune and Blade Runner 2049 when they're making a case for reference discs.
Universal A-Tier 4K. McAvoy's performance is the reason people own this. The 4K steelbook pairs nicely with Unbreakable and Glass for the trilogy shelf, and collectors who own all three tend to admit Glass is the weak link. The 3.5 score reflects an early Universal disc that's fine but not a showpiece.
Sony A-Tier 4K. Verhoeven's satirical military sci-fi gets a real workout in HDR, especially the bug battle sequences where the dust and plasma colors have space to breathe. The 25th anniversary DV steelbook was limited to the US, which frustrated international collectors. The film continues to get reappraised as satire rather than straight action.

Kino Lorber 4K from a new scan of the original negative with Dolby Vision. The DV grade is considered more faithful than the earlier StudioCanal European release. Two commentaries, a 60-minute Sydney Pollack documentary, and a 25-minute Redford conversation make this one of the better extras packages in the Kino catalog. The slipcover goes in and out of stock so grab it during a Kino sale if you care about that. One of the essential 70s paranoia thrillers alongside The Parallax View and All the President's Men.

C-Tier Severin Films 4K. Dennis Hopper's 1982 punk drama, not the Neil LaBute film. Severin did a 4K restoration, and there was an upgrade program for people who bought the Blu-ray. C-Tier Sony 4K. Satoshi Kon's dream-invasion anime, and the 4K announcement was huge for anime collectors. People immediately asked for Perfect Blue next. The steelbook looked great, though one person's Amazon copy arrived pre-damaged. Nolan's Inception gets compared to this constantly. The C-Tier suggests the transfer didn't get the full treatment it deserved.

Most of the discussion around Red Dragon circles back to Manhunter instead. Collectors keep asking when Mann's version will get a proper 4K, and Red Dragon threads reliably turn into Manhunter appreciation posts. The Kino disc is competent but the C-Tier rating reflects Brett Ratner's direction more than the transfer itself.
Paramount's 4K got dragged for ugly cover artwork and the giant "FIRST TIME ON 4K ULTRA HD" banner. Polanski's name is conspicuously absent from the cover, which people noticed. The better deal is the Paramount Scares Volume 1 box set at roughly $10 USD per film. One thing to check before buying the standalone disc is whether it's the corrected version, because the original pressing had sync issues and a missing line of dialogue.
dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky
Severin's 4K lacks HDR by Jodorowsky's explicit request. He felt the color grade would not be truly director-approved with HDR applied, and Severin respected that. The disc delivers the color work at 4K resolution alone. Collectors are more excited about the packaging and the included CD soundtrack than the technical specs. The real demand in Jodorowsky circles is for Holy Mountain and El Topo in 4K.
