Post-Apocalyptic movies available on 4K Blu-ray, ranked by transfer quality.
dir. Graham Wagner, Geneva Robertson-Dworet
S-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. Amazon exclusive that sold out and restocked a couple of times. Streaming quality on Amazon was rough for this one, so the physical disc looks noticeably better. The steelbook has been hard to find at retail price.
Warner Bros. · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Philip Kaufman
The residents of San Francisco are becoming drone-like shadows of their former selves, and as the phenomenon spreads, two Department of Health workers uncover the horrifying truth.
Arrow Video · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. George Miller, George Ogilvie
S-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. The third Mad Max with Tina Turner, and the one that divides collectors the most. Best Buy steelbooks for this and Road Warrior went up for preorder and moved fast, with designs that match the Fury Road 4K steelbook aesthetic.
dir. Roland Emmerich
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Roland Emmerich's movie about the moon falling. The Best Buy steelbook hit $5 USD at Walmart, which is about right. People acknowledged it was an awful movie while buying the steelbook for the shelf. Went to home video about two months after theatrical release, which says something about the box office.
Lionsgate · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Katsuhiro Otomo
A-Tier 4K with the Japanese import being the best release. The big question for Western buyers is whether the Japanese disc includes English subtitles. Hand-drawn animation at this resolution shows every individual cel, which is the point.
Japanese Import · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Marc Caro
A-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Jeunet and Caro's post-apocalyptic French comedy. StudioCanal's French catalog is growing.
StudioCanal
dir. John Carpenter
Paramount 30th anniversary 4K steelbook is up for preorder. People who already own the 4K are split on the art, comparing it unfavorably to the Escape from New York steelbook. Fresh buyers are more enthusiastic.
Paramount Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. George Miller
A-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. Miller's Fury Road, and the disc people use to show off what 4K can do. The Black & Chrome version never got a 4K release, which is a persistent frustration since plenty of collectors consider it the definitive way to watch. The steelbook sold out instantly and scalper bots were blamed. Multiple steelbook editions exist across retailers and regions.
dir. Edgar Wright
Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.
Universal Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. David Hogan
C-Tier Turbine 4K. Pamela Anderson sci-fi. Kino Lorber also has a release. The C-Tier is expected.
Turbine
dir. Dan Trachtenberg
Paramount 4K steelbook preorder is live. The art drew immediate attention because the back panel spoils the ending, and the thread is split between loving the design and being baffled by that choice. People coming in for a first watch are being warned to avoid looking at the case.
Limited Edition Steelbook
dir. Danny Boyle
No 4K scan exists for this one because it was shot on standard definition digital video. The upcoming Sony steelbook is an upscale from 480p source material. The current Blu-ray already looks rough, and the hope is that Sony's upscaling and HDR grading can at least make it watchable. The Raid pulled off a similar trick with low-res source and turned out well.
