Psychological Thriller movies available on 4K Blu-ray, ranked by transfer quality.
dir. Stanley Kubrick
S-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. The Best Buy steelbook sold out within minutes and restocked briefly before going again. The saturated colors of the Korova Milk Bar come alive in HDR in a way the Blu-ray never managed.
Warner Bros. · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. David Cronenberg
Cronenberg and Mortensen at their best. This was the last movie ever released on VHS, which is the kind of trivia that makes a collector want to own every format it ever came on. Makes a great double feature with Eastern Promises.
dir. Mary Harron
S-Tier Lionsgate 4K. The bloodpack special edition with liquid in the packaging is a collector's item, but there are already reports of them bursting and ruining shelves. The standard steelbook and the Walmart steelbook are safer options for the same disc.
Lionsgate · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Francis Ford Coppola
S-Tier 4K. The 6-disc set with the Final Cut, Redux, and theatrical versions is the best home video release of this film. It was a Best Buy exclusive that went out of stock and has been trading at a premium on eBay. The Eagle Pictures Italian release is also well regarded.
Eagle Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Steven Soderbergh
S-Tier Universal 4K. Steven Soderbergh's latest. Walmart steelbook shipping complaints are a recurring theme.
Universal Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Brian De Palma
S-Tier Criterion 4K. De Palma's best film according to a lot of people. The Criterion reviews have been positive.
Criterion Collection · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Sam Raimi
S-Tier Scream Factory 4K. Sam Raimi's superhero before Spider-Man. Scream Factory's transfer brings out the dutch angles and color contrast that Raimi was experimenting with pre-Tobey Maguire.
Scream Factory · 4K + Blu-ray
Criterion put this on 4K in November 2025 and it landed as a new standard for the format. Rare Waves has a UK Limited Edition Steelbook for 2026 using the same Warner transfer, which is the pickup for non-US collectors.
Criterion Collection · 4K Ultra HD
dir. Ridley Scott
S-Tier Universal 4K. Hopkins as Lecter in Florence. Universal's catalog 4K.
dir. Todd Phillips
S-Tier Warner Bros. 4K. The Joker musical sequel that nobody asked for. The box makes a laughing sound when you open it, which, depending on your perspective, is either fun or insulting. Most people expected it to be awful based on reception, and the collectors who actually watched it found it less terrible than advertised. The King of Comedy connection is what Criterion fans pull on.
dir. David Lynch
S-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Lynch's 1997 film, and the Criterion 4K with a Janus restoration has been confirmed. People immediately dropped their Kino Lorber carts when the news broke. The Mulholland Drive 4K from Criterion/StudioCanal was incredible, so expectations are high.
StudioCanal
Lynch's death is still pulling people back to the Criterion disc. Someone picked it up at Barnes and Noble this week, and it sits on nearly every wishlist going into the Criterion flash sale. The Criterion 4K is S-Tier.
StudioCanal · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Patrick Lussier
S-Tier Scream Factory 4K. The 2009 3D slasher remake. Scream Factory's steelbook was available during their 13 Days sale, and DeepDiscount had it for $13 USD.
dir. Kelly Reichardt
S-Tier Criterion 4K. Kelly Reichardt's eco-thriller. No relevant collector discussion around the 4K specifically.
dir. Michael Powell
S-Tier StudioCanal 4K. Michael Powell's 1960 horror that ended his career. The new 4K restoration played in art house theaters and the reception was strong. The old Blu-ray was never that good, so this is a meaningful upgrade. People love to point out this is better than Psycho, which came out the same year. Scorsese helped revive the film's reputation decades later.
dir. John Frankenheimer
Kino Lorber 4K of Frankenheimer's late-career thriller with Affleck. Showed up in an Amazon 3-for-2 deal, where the main complaint was Amazon shipping damaged copies. Thin collector interest beyond completionists and Frankenheimer fans.
Kino Lorber · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. David Koepp
Lionsgate S-Tier 4K. Kevin Bacon's 1999 haunted house film that got unfairly overshadowed by The Sixth Sense releasing the same year. The Lionsgate steelbook with lenticular slipcover is an Amazon exclusive that has restocked a few times through Please Rewind. Collectors who own it tend to recommend it enthusiastically.

Second Sight Films · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Robert Eggers

dir. Roman Polanski
A quiet and inconspicuous man rents an apartment in Paris where he finds himself drawn into a rabbit hole of dangerous paranoia.
Carlotta Films · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Terry Gilliam
In the year 2035, convict James Cole reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to discover the origin of a deadly virus that wiped out nearly all of the earth's population and forced the survivors into underground communities. But when Cole is mistakenly sent to 1990 instead of 1996, he's arrested and locked up in a mental hospital. There he meets psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly and the son of a famous virus expert who may hold the key to the Army of the 12 Monkeys; thought to be responsible for unleashing the killer disease.
VistaVision source material gives this a level of detail that pre-1960s films rarely reach on disc. Colors are incredible and the shoulder stitching on Kim Novak's wardrobe is visible in scenes where it used to be a smear. A standard pick in any top 3 reference disc conversation alongside Dune and Lawrence of Arabia.
dir. Jean-Pierre Melville
Betrayed by an informant, Philippe Gerbier finds himself trapped in a torturous Nazi prison camp. Though Gerbier escapes to rejoin the Resistance in occupied Marseilles, France, and exacts his revenge on the informant, he must continue a quiet, seemingly endless battle against the Nazis in an atmosphere of tension, paranoia and distrust.
dir. Denis Villeneuve
A-Tier Paramount 4K. Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi film. The muted color palette and the alien language sequences look great on this disc. Often recommended alongside Blade Runner 2049.
Paramount Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Paul Verhoeven
A-Tier Lionsgate 4K. Over 200 4K releases watched and this one's transfer stood out. Verhoeven's erotic thriller looks better than expected for early 90s.
dir. Jonathan Mostow

Turbine · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Yorgos Lanthimos

A-Tier Arrow Video 4K. Cronenberg's car crash film. Arrow gave it the boutique treatment.
Consistently called reference quality. The Dolby Atmos sound design gets specific praise, with the border tunnel sequence being the demo moment everyone mentions. Every Villeneuve film in 4K is considered excellent, and Sicario might be the best example. The Best Buy steelbook vs. Target steelbook debate has been going for years, with opinions split roughly evenly. Often found for $5 USD in Walmart bins, which might be the best value in all of 4K collecting.

A married man's one-night stand comes back to haunt him when that lover begins to stalk him and his family.
dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky
Severin's 4K lacks HDR by Jodorowsky's explicit request. He felt the color grade would not be truly director-approved with HDR applied, and Severin respected that. The disc delivers the color work at 4K resolution alone. Collectors are more excited about the packaging and the included CD soundtrack than the technical specs. The real demand in Jodorowsky circles is for Holy Mountain and El Topo in 4K.
Severin Films · 4K + Blu-ray

Paramount 4K steelbook preorder is live. The art drew immediate attention because the back panel spoils the ending, and the thread is split between loving the design and being baffled by that choice. People coming in for a first watch are being warned to avoid looking at the case.
