Survival Horror movies available on 4K Blu-ray, ranked by transfer quality.
dir. Ridley Scott
The transfer finally gets the color timing right after years of home video versions that never matched the theatrical. Looks really good on an OLED. The Aliens 4K got hit with AI upscaling controversy, but the original Alien's transfer is clean. The Filmarena steelbook is the collector's item if you can find one, otherwise the standard 4K is the same disc.
20th Century Studios · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Fede Álvarez
S-Tier Disney 4K. The transfer looks really good on the claustrophobic station interiors and the xenomorph practical effects gain resolution in 4K. A limited edition steelbook is available through Rare Waves.
Walt Disney Studios · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Luis Llosa
S-Tier Paramount 4K. A 90s creature feature on 4K for people who grew up watching it on cable.
Sony Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Kinji Fukasaku
S-Tier Arrow Video 4K. The Japanese survival thriller. Arrow's box set is what collectors have been waiting for.
Arrow Video · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Sean Byrne
S-Tier IFC Films 4K. A new genre release from IFC.
IFC Films · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Zack Snyder
S-Tier Scream Factory 4K. Zack Snyder's fast zombies remake. Scream Factory's horror catalog.
Scream Factory · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Neil Marshall
S-Tier Second Sight Films 4K. Neil Marshall's werewolf film. Second Sight's genre releases from the UK are well packaged.
Second Sight Films · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. John McTiernan
S-Tier 20th Century Studios 4K. McTiernan's sci-fi action classic. The 4-movie pack from Amazon came in a DVD case for some reason, which confused everyone. The Prey steelbook from Best Buy was a big deal since Disney rarely puts streaming-only films on disc. Collectors are building Predator steelbook shelves across all five films.
dir. Dan Trachtenberg
S-Tier Disney 4K with a 4.5 score. The Predator prequel that was a streaming exclusive nobody expected to get a physical release. The Comanche dub is included, and collectors consider it a special extra. Dan Trachtenberg is now 3 for 3 with fans.
dir. James Wan
Two men wake up chained in a grimy abandoned bathroom, left with cryptic instructions from the sadistic Jigsaw killer who has forced them into a gruesome game for their freedom.
Lionsgate · Steelbook
dir. Kevin Greutert
Between the events of Saw and Saw II, a desperate John Kramer travels to Mexico for an experimental medical procedure, only to discover the entire operation is a scam — and turns the tables on the con artists in his signature way.
Lionsgate · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Wes Craven
The weakest film in the franchise but collectors buying the steelbook set need it for completion. Scream 4 was the missing piece that annoyed everyone for months, since 3 came out on 4K before 4 did, leaving a visible gap on the shelf. S-Tier transfer regardless of how you feel about the film.
Paramount Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Darren Lynn Bousman
Lionsgate S-Tier 4K. The Saw franchise entry with Chris Rock. The steelbook was part of a Lionsgate restock wave that sold through quickly, and the Saw crowd tends to grab these as a set. The 4.5 score and S-Tier rating suggest the disc itself is stronger than the film's reputation.
This week's editor's pick. 5K scan from the original 35mm negatives with Dolby Vision and 7.1 DTS-HD MA. Lionsgate Limited sold out twice and restocked. $35 USD for 4K plus Blu-ray plus digital.
dir. Frank Darabont
After a violent storm, a dense cloud of mist envelops a small Maine town, trapping David Drayton and his five-year-old son in a local grocery store with other local residents. They soon discover that the mist conceals deadly horrors that threaten their lives, and worse, their sanity.
dir. Alejandro González Iñárritu
Found at Goodwill this week. That's the right price for a disc this good. The 4K is one of the better Lubezki transfers in the format. If you see it cheap, grab it.
dir. Yeon Sang-ho
When a zombie virus pushes Korea into a state of emergency, those trapped on an express train to Busan must fight for their own survival.
StudioCanal · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. M. Night Shyamalan
A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they're at the center of a dark and sinister event.
Warner Bros. · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Danny Boyle
A-Tier 4K. The Danny Boyle sequel got a strong steelbook release, and the visual callbacks to Dawn of the Dead are all over the film. Better on disc than the streaming version let on.
dir. Chuck Russell
A psychiatrist, familiar with the knife-wielding dream demon Freddy Krueger, helps teens at a mental hospital battle the killer who is invading their dreams.
dir. John Krasinski
A-Tier Paramount 4K. The silence in this film makes the Atmos mix one of the more interesting home theater experiences you can have. Every creak and footstep matters. The 4K disc has been a popular entry point for people getting into the format.
Steelbook showed up in a haul. The Krasinski monster sequels are better on disc than streaming suggests because the sound design is half the film and compression eats it.
Paramount Pictures · Steelbook
A-Tier Scream Factory 4K. Fede Alvarez's brutal Evil Dead remake. Scream Factory's horror catalog.
dir. Sam Raimi
Ash Williams and his girlfriend Linda find a log cabin in the woods with a voice recording from an archeologist who had recorded himself reciting ancient chants from "The Book of the Dead." As they play the recording an evil power is unleashed taking over Linda's body.
dir. Jeremy Saulnier

Second Sight Films · Limited Edition
dir. Jeannot Szwarc
Police chief Brody must protect the citizens of Amity after a second monstrous shark begins terrorizing the waters.
dir. Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig
A-Tier Lionsgate 4K. The Saw franchise revival entry. Mostly appears in Saw completionist collections and in Walmart steelbook stock lists. Not a title people seek out individually, but franchise collectors keep it in rotation around Halloween.
dir. Joe Johnston
A-Tier Universal 4K. The weakest Jurassic Park, but Universal's new Dolby Vision remaster actually fixed the color timing issues from the original 4K. The old transfer had a weird tan cast that the new version corrected. There's debate about whether the new Atmos remix is too heavy-handed compared to the original DTS-X mix. The remastered disc was $14.99 USD on Amazon pre-order, which is basically impulse territory.
Universal Pictures · Steelbook
dir. George A. Romero
A-Tier Criterion 4K. Romero's original zombie film. Criterion treats it like the landmark it is.
Criterion Collection · 4K + Blu-ray
dir. Edgar Wright
The new 4K steelbook got people hoping the entire Cornetto trilogy would follow. The 4K transfer itself is divisive, with at least one commenter calling the Shaun/Hot Fuzz/World's End set maybe the worst 4K discs they own. Gruv's 3-for-$30 and Amazon deals keep the price reasonable. The Cornetto trilogy 4K set has been as low as $27 USD on Amazon, making it the better value over individual steelbooks.
Universal Pictures · 4K + Blu-ray
The Lionsgate 4K is out of print individually but still available in the Groovy Collection box with Evil Dead II and Ash vs Evil Dead. The standalone steelbook runs $40 USD on eBay if you can find one with a slip. Most people are telling newcomers to grab the box while it lasts since that's the cheapest path to both films in 4K.
dir. John Carpenter
Carpenter's practical effects hold up better than most modern CGI and the Universal 4K is A-Tier, though the missing Dolby Vision is the one complaint collectors have. Signed copies from convention appearances are circulating and the Titans of Cult edition has been restocking through Books-a-Million.
dir. Ruben Fleischer
Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock move to the American heartland as they face off against evolved zombies, fellow survivors, and the growing pains of the snarky makeshift family.
The chilling Jigsaw killer returns. When a gruesome murder victim surfaces with his trademark methods, Detective Eric Matthews discovers that being caught is merely another piece of Jigsaw's intricate puzzle.
Jigsaw has disappeared. While detectives scramble to locate him, two unwitting victims become the latest pawns in his vicious game.
Despite Jigsaw's death, Lieutenant Rigg is forced to take part in a new game to save the lives of two colleagues.
dir. James DeMonaco
B-Tier Paramount 4K. The third Purge. Standard franchise 4K.
dir. James Cameron
C-Tier from 20th Century Studios, which is a sore spot for a film this good. The 4K exists and people buy it, but the conversation is always about when someone will do a proper restoration. Cameron in 4K should look better than this.
20th Century Studios · Blu-ray
dir. Nia DaCosta
Sony steelbook for the Danny Boyle sequel, April 21 release. The first film's disc moved well and people are pre-ordering based on that alone.
Sony Pictures · Steelbook

This task strikes the workers as simple enough, but then, as they proceed deeper underground, they encounter an unspeakable monstrosity intent on devouring them all.
dir. Colin Trevorrow

dir. Christophe Gans
Umbrella Entertainment 4K on June 3. The first film had a rough go on disc and people are cautiously optimistic that this one gets better treatment.
Umbrella Entertainment · 4K Ultra HD
