Alien films available on 4K UHD, ranked by transfer quality.

Fox put the original Alien on 4K with the 2019 40th Anniversary Edition, S-Tier and the obvious entry point. Disney inherited the franchise and released Aliens as a 2024 Ultimate Collector's Edition that rates below the 2014 Blu-ray, and Alien: Romulus arrived on 4K via Disney in late 2024 with a UK Matt Ferguson steelbook variant. Alien 3, Resurrection, Prometheus, and Covenant aren't on 4K yet, so the buying path stops at three discs.

The 40th Anniversary Edition from 20th Century is the best release for the 1979 original, and it earns the S-Tier on transfer alone. The franchise's 4K story is messier than it looks once you move past the first film. Aliens (1986) shipped with Cameron's degrained, regraded master, which split the fanbase down the middle and sent grain purists back to the older Blu-ray. The recent Romulus steelbook from Vice Press has been the main franchise focus on the new-release side.

The Matt Ferguson Romulus Embossed wave landed in the UK, Germany, and France on April 20-22 2026, six days before Alien Day, and the embossed treatment is the cleanest version of the Ferguson art after two years of cheaper SKUs. The April wave is in stock direct from regional Amazons and ships through Diabolik for US buyers. FilmArena has glow-in-the-dark editions of Alien (1979) and Prometheus on the same week, but neither is a Romulus release and both come with licensing questions. C-Tier from 20th Century Studios, which is a sore spot for a film this good. The 4K exists and people buy it, but the conversation is always about when someone will do a proper restoration. Cameron in 4K should look better than this.
